A lot of Amazon's Prime Day laptop deals suck. Here's what to snag at one of its rivals instead.

Aside from Apple, you'll save more money on a new laptop elsewhere.

Amazon is good at a lot of things — fast deliveries, making cheap smart home devices, creating neighborhood surveillance networks — but it's never been great at putting laptops on sale. The retail giant's listings tend to be rife with sketchy third-party sellers, inflated prices, and discontinued models, making it tough to distinguish the "must-buys" from the "too-good-to-be-trues." And historically, competitors have offered better, less misleading deals on top brands like Apple, HP, Acer, Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell, and ASUS.

This Prime Day, we do have to admit that Amazon is doing better than normal with more legit listings (not from third-party sellers) and more legit discounts. However, there still are only a handful of laptop deals we recommend adding to your Amazon cart during its Prime Big Deal Days sale (aka Prime Day 2). Much better ones can be found at Best Buy, which is currently hosting a 48-hour Flash Sale (directly overlapping with Prime Day) amidst a monthlong holiday kickoff event. Walmart also has some good cheap laptop options on sale during its Deals Holiday Kickoff event.

Read on for a highly selective list of the very best laptop deals available at different retailers in the lead-up to Prime Big Deal Days, all of which we've verified by cross-checking pricing and model numbers with their manufacturer. (FYI: This list does not include Prime Day deals on gaming laptops, which we've rounded up separately.)

Note: All newly added deals are marked with a ✨, while deals with a 🔥 have dropped to an all-time low price. Amazon's exclusive invite-only deals are marked with a 📨. Deals with a strikeout were either sold out or expired at the time of writing.

Prime Day laptop deals under $500

Why we like it

Remember how we said Amazon stepped it up a little this Prime Day on laptop deals? This is one of those deals. This is the lowest price we've seen on this model of the Acer Aspire 3 (AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) and it's got really great specs for its price point.

Our pick: Apple MacBook Air, 13.3-inch (M1)
$749.99 at Amazon and Best Buy (save $249.01)

Why we like it

It's nothing new, but here's one great laptop deal you will find on Amazon ahead of Prime Big Deal Days: The Mashable Choice Award-winning M1 MacBook Air from late 2020 has been clinging to a record-low price of $749.99 there ever since its flagship Prime Day sale in July. (That's 25% off its $999 MSRP, which is a big discount for a MacBook.) If it happens to sell out there or get more expensive, Best Buy was matching this price at the time of writing.

Why we like it

The September 2023 release of the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 makes Best Buy's sale price on the 2021 version look even better: the second generation model with a similar configuration (16GB RAM and 512GB SSD) retails for $1,999.99 compared to this model's $1,399.99. Though the 2023 model does beat this 2021 model with an Intel Core i7 processor over the i5, it's still a beast of a Windows 11 machine — Mashable's Alex Perry referred to it as "near perfect." You'll obviously still get the laptop-to-tablet versatility of the hinge, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, Dolby Vision, and stylus compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laptops do get cheaper around Amazon's Prime events (including its flagship summer Prime Day sale and the now-annual fall iteration), but most of the worthwhile deals are found at retailers other than Amazon itself. Competitors like Best Buy typically host concurrent sales that feature less third-party listings, less inflated pricing, and more up-to-date configurations.
