Humans are good at many things, but we truly excel at sleeping. At least, we try. Sometimes it takes extreme levels of comfort. We do everything we can to make our daily lives as soft, cosy, and snuggly as possible. And for that we should be proud.

Indeed, we take comfort to a whole other level at bedtime, with mattresses, pillows, and a massive range of accessories helping us to get a good night’s sleep. There’s no doubt you’ll feel the benefit from a deep comfy sleep the next day — essential to a happy, healthy lifestyle. The mattress is probably the most important purchase to guarantee your comfort at night. But that doesn't mean you should disregard everything else.

The duvet is another essential investment, and you should carefully consider all your options before deciding on anything. Fortunately, your duvet options are plentiful, with something for everyone and every budget. Not to mention every required comfort level. Before you make a decision, snuggle down with a bit of duvet research.

What are duvets made from?

While the classic duvet is filled with feathers, modern duvets — and the selection below — are filled with all sorts, including feathers, down, microfibres, and other innovative materials. Different fillings may offer different qualities. Some are insulating, for instance, while others can be breathable or cooling. But watch out for fillings, such as feathers or down, that might bring on allergies.

What’s best, cotton or microfibre?

This is a common debate in bedding. Some duvets have covers made from 100% cotton, others use synthetic microfibre. Cotton is obviously soft, comfortable, and natural, while microfibre is also soft to the touch and has its own benefits, such as being anti-allergy and long-lasting. Cotton is also hypoallergenic, but if you’re an allergy sufferer and want cotton, go for 100% organic cotton. Overall, it’s a case of personal preference.

What is a tog rating?

In the most basic terms, the tog rating is a measurement of how the warm the duvet is. Or more specifically, how effectively a duvet will insulate your body heat. For a super warm winter duvet, look for a tog rating of around 13 to 15. Light, summery duvets are more likely around 4.5 (or even lower, as seen below). The standard is usually 10.5.

What sizes do duvets come in?

All the duvets listed below are available as a double, because that’s most people will be shopping for. But all the duvets below are also available in single, king, and super king sizes — in some cases they go up as far as emperor size. Remember that prices will go up in price with sizes. In some cases, going up in size can add quite a bit onto the total cost.

What is the best duvet?

To save you from hours of research, we have checked out everything on offer from top brands like John Lewis, Simba, and Silentnight, and highlighted some of the best duvets available. We have tried to find examples of duvets that work all year round, with a focus on temperature control, breathability, insulation, and of course, comfort.

These are the best duvets in 2023.

The John Lewis Hungarian Goose Down Duvet drapes cosily around your body, preventing drafts and cold spots. It's all down to the design. It's sewn to create evenly divided square boxes, meaning the filling is evenly distributed.

It's a luxurious duvet — surprisingly lightweight considering the warmth it generates. It is pretty expensive, and the price goes up with the larger size options, so you should expect this level of quality.

This duvet is suitable for people with dust mite allergies, and all of the natural bedding suppliers provide a guarantee that the feather and down is sourced only as a by-product of the food industry. And there's a five-year guarantee.

The Simba Hybrid Duvet uses space-inspired fabric technology that's designed to take the heat away from your body, so you can rest easy.

The Aerelle Cool Night fibre is embedded with semi-conducting minerals, helping you stay comfortable all night long. The super-soft filling is stitched evenly into square pockets, so you shouldn't get any lumps and bumps.

Materials used in this duvet are 100% recycled, hypoallergenic, and don't use any animal products, and the breathable cotton all comes from BCI sources. This sort of thing isn't essential for your comfort, but it's good to know.

There are few greater pleasures than a warm, cosying winter duvet. That’s exactly what you get with the Night Comfort Easy Care Double Duvet. And it’s great value — the quality of the duvet goes beyond the relatively low price.

With a 16.5 tog rating, you can rest assured that it will keep you toasty during those long, chilly winter nights. There’s more to it than warmth. It’s filled with a recycled polyester that works as a hypoallergenic alternative to goose down.

Some reviewers have noted that the filling moves around slightly, causing the duvet to sometimes shift in the covers, which means you may need to re-fluff it now and again. A small price for comfort and warmth.

The summer duvet is a thing in itself — a particular pleasure that’s both comforting and cool. The Air Comfort Feels Like Down Duvet gets our vote for the best summer option. And it comes at a great price, too.

Not only does it has a pleasingly low tog rating — because no one needs a plump, sweat-inducing duvet when the hot nights roll in — it’s made with a cooling technology. High thread microfibre and a fine yarn hollowfibre filling ensure that its breathable, with large pores for effective air permeability. This means the duvet is great for regulating your temperature through the night.

It also wicks away moisture for a dry night’s sleep. Throw in anti-allergy and anti-mite properties and you’re sure to sleep easy.

If you want an alternative, this Bamboo Organic duvet comes well recommended from Amazon reviewers. It’s made from 100% organic bamboo, which means it’s naturally hypoallergenic as well as naturally luxurious.

If you are an allergy sufferer, this could well be your best option, as it keeps away dust mites — the bamboo also has antibacterial properties.

It’s filled with temperature controlling bamboo feather, while the bamboo cover is highly breathable. It has a higher tog rating than some of the alternative options on this list, but it’s designed for all seasons — cooling is the summer, warming in the winter.

If you want high-quality home comforts, John Lewis is the place to go. It’s the absolute standard bearer in this department. But the Piglet in Bed duvet does offer something slightly out-of-the-box in duvet terms.

This duvet is filled with insulating Merino wool, which doesn’t have a tog rating. Instead, it maintains body temperature. That comfort is capped off by a 100% cotton cover, which is breathable and moisture wicking.

Corner loops fasten to Piglet in Bed linen, so the duvet stays firm within the cover, making for a plush, ultra-comfortable night’s sleep. The only downside, of course, is that it’s not the cheapest — but true comfort can be expensive.

The Silentnight Soft As Silk Duvet provides a level of comfort and softness you wouldn’t normally expect to find in a product of this price. That's exactly why Silentnight continues to be such a popular bedding brand.

It has a soft-to-the-touch cover and sumptuous microfibre filling. It's designed to keep you cozy all year round, but is likely best in the spring and autumn. It might be found lacking during the coldest winter nights.

This affordable duvet is fully machine washable and hypoallergenic, and comes in a variety of sizes. Buyers also benefit from a generous five-year guarantee.
