Let's face it: Dating is hard. Swiping endlessly on dating apps, blindly walking into a setup your friends assured you would be "perfect," and waiting in vain to meet someone organically can sometimes be disheartening (to put it lightly). This is particularly true for those of us looking for a partner who's chill with cannabis.

Sure, recreational weed hasn't been legalized and/or decriminalized in every state, but you should be able to find someone with a mutual love for smoking a joint or enjoying an edible no matter where you live. (Life, and stoners, find a way.) That's why we've scoured the web to find the best 420-friendly dating sites and apps where you can connect with folks who enjoy cannabis just as much as you do.

Whether you've had that super-awkward first date where you've suddenly become an unofficial criminal to the other person or just want to skip the hassle of discussing it altogether, we've got you covered with a list of 420-friendly dating sites to make your search for a canna-lover as stress-free as possible. So, pack your favorite strain and get ready to meet your match.

Cannabis culture and 420-friendly dating in 2023

Before we introduce you to the world of 420-friendly dating, let's take a second to look at some facts.

  • As of Aug 23, 2023, 21 states (Washington, D.C., and Guam) have legalized recreational marijuana; Virginia and Minnesota will also legalize recreational weed in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

  • Approximately 88% of adults want to legalize weed. According to the Pew Research Center, 88% of U.S. adults favor legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use. Only 10% of adults say it shouldn't be legal at all.

  • Weed has the potential to improve your love life. In 2019, Match's Singles in America survey revealed that smokers were 151% more likely to be dating someone when compared to nonsmokers. What's more? Smokers were 109% more likely to have had multiple orgasms and had 3.6% more orgasms per sexual encounter.

More than filters: Finding a weed-friendly partner is easier than ever

By now, you're probably thinking: This is great, but how do I find the right 420-friendly dating site for me? Luckily, there are unique dating sites designed specifically for this purpose — think High There! and My420Mate. If you're more into the mainstream dating sites (we're looking at you, match, and Zoosk), you can use filters built into the apps to find your ideal smoking buddy.

Some of the best 420-friendly dating apps even have filters specifically for weed users, making it super easy to find other stoners looking for love.

How much do weed-friendly dating sites cost?

Each site and app we mention below has a free version you can sign up for — though these basic membership levels offer varying access to the apps' features. However, if you’re serious about things, it can be worth shelling out the cash for premium membership tiers, which unlock more features that, in turn, should theoretically unlock more (or better) matches and, therefore, more dates. Price points exist for almost every budget, too, so you can choose the service that feels the best for you.

Here are the best dating sites for cannabis enthusiasts and 420-friendly singles looking for love in 2023.

UPDATE: Aug. 23, 2023, 4:20 p.m. EDT This article has been updated to reflect the Mashable team's latest experiences with dating sites and apps. We selected a best overall option and removed two apps (Zoosk and EliteSingles) that weren't providing good results for 420 singles.

Our Pick

Match

Best 420-friendly dating app

Who it's for:

Owned by the Match Group, Match is a mainstream dating app that tends to appeal to a more left-leaning audience. While it's not specifically a 420-friendly dating site, Match gives you a space to express your views on cannabis and connect with folks who are open to the idea of enjoying it together, whether it's sharing a joint or visiting a marijuana dispensary on a first date.

Why we picked this:

Because of its large active user base and because weed preferences are built right into the matching system, we believe Match is the clear winner among the best 420-friendly dating apps. The Mashable team has also tested (and loved) Match.

Match combines the ease of Tinder with the compatibility-matching of eharmony. It's a site for people looking for deeper connections rather than casual hookups — in other words, it’s meant for relationships, not flings. With Match, it’s much easier to determine if your potential matches smoke weed ahead of time because the app factors it into your compatibility.

When signing up, you'll be asked about your stance on marijuana to help you match with others who get your lifestyle from the get-go. This means that you can find someone who shares your love of weed and wants the same kind of relationship that you do. Plus, the Top Picks feature makes it easy to start conversations with people who are already interested in what you have to say.

high there dating app screenshot

High There!

Best cannabis community app

Who it's for:

High There! isn't a dating app but a virtual space for cannabis users and enthusiasts to come together and connect. If you're passionate about cannabis and want to express and explore your cannabis-related content freely, High There! is the community for you.

Whether you're a stoner, an average cannabis consumer, or an occasional recreational smoker, High There! is a pretty cool place to meet people who love weed.

Why we picked this:

You can get started on the app with just your Facebook profile. From there, you can find singles, friends, and professional contacts. You can also chat with others in groups, check out reviews, post photos, and even find local marijuana dispensaries. You are only given five questions about your personality, cannabis consumption, and what you’re looking for in matches before you can start meeting and chatting with other like-minded folks.

High There! is often said to be the "Tinder for weed smokers" because it’s pretty similar in mechanics. You scroll through other users on the app who are in your area and can then “say hi” to them, which means you’re interested in connecting with them. Be warned, though: People on High There! aren’t necessarily there to look for dates; they’re also there to meet other cannabis consumers for friendship and smoking buddies.

The best part is that High There! is completely free to download, without any in-app purchases.

Okcupid screenshot

OkCupid

Best dating app for liberals

Who it's for:

OkCupid is an inclusive dating app that welcomes and accepts people who use cannabis, although it's not exclusively designed for the 420 community.

OkCupid lets you filter potential matches based on smoking preferences, which makes it easier for cannabis users and recreational weed smokers to connect with other people like them. The app's liberal-leaning user base also makes it a safe space for pot enthusiasts.

Why we picked this:

OkCupid is a tried-and-true dating site that has been matching singles online since 2004. It remains hugely popular thanks to its sleek interface, great algorithm, and large user base looking for all types of relationships.

The OkCupid questionnaire asks about your personality, physical appearance, sexual preferences, education, and relationship with weed. While the questions are optional, it's recommended that you answer at least the 420 question to help you find other pot lovers.

Once you've fine-tuned your profile and uploaded a few photos, you can start matching. Best yet, OkCupid offers a feature where you can search for keywords in people's profiles, such as "420," "weed," and "cannabis." This makes it super easy to find other cannabis fans on the site.

panel of screenshots from grindr app

Grindr

Best for gay stoners

Who it's for:

Grindr's anything-goes environment means that it's a paradise for men seeking no-strings-attached hookups with other men and LGBTQ folks. For the same reason, it's not necessarily the best place to go looking for love, but it is a safe place to advertise your 420 preferences and maybe find a smoking buddy along the way.

Why we picked this:

Not only is Grindr one of the best LGBTQ-focused dating apps on the planet, but it's the undisputed king of fast-casual hookup apps. And thanks to Grindr's famously NSFW environment, no one's going to think twice about a profile that says "420 friendly." (If you aren't prepared for unsolicited dick pics, and lots of them, then Grindr isn't for you.) Sure, 420 sessions may not be every Grindr user's preferred flavor of fun, and you may attract people looking to party with other types of substances, but it's still one of the best places for gay men to find like-minded stoners.

Of course, if you're looking for love, Grindr may not be the best 420-friendly dating app for you. This is definitely a hookup app, so manage your expectations if you're looking for something serious.

With those caveats out of the way, there's a lot more to love about Grindr. As an LGBTQ dating app, it's an inclusive space for queer men, non-binary individuals, and trans folks. Grindr has also taken strides to create a safer environment for users, with initiatives promoting social justice and safe sex.

As a location-based app, Grindr shows you other users looking for ASAP hookups in your area. And because it's the go-to hookup app for gay men, it has a large and active user base even outside of major cities, which isn't always the case with dating apps. There's also a robust free version that lets you match and chat with partners right away.

420 singles app screenshot

420 Singles

Best Tinder alternative

Who it's for:

Launched in 2011, 420 Singles proudly declares itself as "a place to meet single people in the cannabis community looking for love." Basically, it’s a space where 420-friendly is a given. No matter what, you know you won’t be dismissed from the start for your interest in weed.

Unlike traditional dating sites, 420 Singles puts cannabis front and center in finding matches without any judgment or prejudice.

Why we picked this:

The interface on the app is very similar to Tinder: You swipe right or left to express interest in a profile or not, and there’s also a messaging feature built into the app. Keep an eye out for fake or dodgy profiles, though — the site is riddled with fake profiles, bots, and inactive members.

Once you’ve created a profile, you can set who you’re looking for with filters of age range and distance up to 1,000 miles, which is a little excessive but probably reasonable if you want to chat about weed (or sext). 420 Singles has also gone the way of other popular apps and provided users with personality questions to answer (like about favorite movies or if you believe in ghosts or UFOs). When all that’s done, you can start swiping through your own potential matches à la Tinder and use others’ responses to the questions as talking points.

Two silhouettes kissing

iHookup

Best dating app for sexting

Who it's for:

The name is self-explanatory. You use iHookup if you're looking for a no-strings-attached connection that'll fill the partner-shaped hole in your life.

Why we picked this:

Not as porn-y as AdultFriendFinder, but just the right amount of risqué, iHookup is effective in almost the same way (although without as large of a user base to pick from). Like AdultFriend Finder, everyone is here for the same thing (hint: it’s not to find love), and there’s a matchmaking algorithm that takes answers to questions about dirty talk and fetishes in mind — but keep in mind it’s super easy for people to exaggerate here.

The biggest downside is that iHookup's already tiny community (only around 230,700 people join per month) is largely dispersed across the world, so unless you live in a big (big) city, chances are you’re not going to find someone living a cab ride away from you. Realistically, what you'll likely find on this app is a long-distance sexting partner, which might not be a bad thing if that's what you're looking for.

Because it’s literally just for sex, iHookup works for a very specific type of hookup. But it plays well to its strengths (i.e., you can get stoned and chat with potential partners without leaving the house). Be more lenient with your search radius, or you might get stuck with a big fat "zero" on your match count.

hinge screenshot

Hinge

Best dating app if you're in your 20s

Who it's for:

While plenty of more "classic" dating apps out there will work well for those in the cannabis community, Hinge separates itself from the bunch as the only "relationship app" that actively matches singles based on compatibility.

If you're tired of casual hookups and are ready to build a deeper relationship with someone who shares your values and interests, Hinge offers a refreshing approach to online dating, emphasizing compatibility and meaningful conversations over superficial swiping.

Why we picked this:

Hinge was re-launched in 2016 as a very low-pressure dating app focusing on fun information and photos instead of the swiping model. It's designed to feel like an Instagram feed, with interesting tidbits about yourself between photos. When you match with someone, Hinge prompts recipients with a "Your Turn" feature designed to keep the conversation going to decrease the possibility of "ghosting" someone — something that happens far too frequently on dating apps. Hinge wants singles to build relationships instead of hookups or something casual.

The Hinge app is designed for more interaction and engagement than any other dating app. While it still has users' photos and biographical info to swipe through, it also goes the extra mile to make sure it’s easy for users to connect over things like video question prompts and trivia-style questions users can answer and post in their profile. If you like to take a toke and then have a great conversation, Hinge will help you find a pretty ideal smoking partner — and as the app that’s “designed to be deleted,” Hinge is definitely hoping the smoke sesh turns into something more.

While you can’t directly search for 420-friendly matches, it features a section for "vices," including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and harder drugs. Hinge has its own data on how that affects your prospects too: Revealing you’re a cannabis enthusiast might increase your chances of receiving matches by 10 percent, but only if you’re under 25 years old, according to a study from Hinge. If you’re over 25, your likes might decrease by 25 percent. A predilection for weed led to the percentage of likes decreasing by 35 percent for those 40 or older. (The more you know!)

Plenty of fish screenshot

Plenty of Fish

Best dating app for over 35

Who it's for:

Plenty of Fish (POF) is a dating sea teeming with opportunities for companionship, friendship, and a hookup here and there (if that's what you're looking for). Thanks to an interest search feature, you'll easily be able to find a date who would love to roll up a joint with you.

Why we picked this:

It might not have the cultural cachet of apps like Bumble or Tinder, but Plenty of Fish is one of the most popular dating sites among singles, with more than 100,000,000 members worldwide. And it’s not just for dating — if you’re looking for a new smoking buddy, this is a great way to meet less-than-romantic connections too.

Plenty of Fish  is a good alternative to OkCupid and Zoosk — in terms of dating apps, they’re all kind of in the same “tier.”

While you can search by location, age, and gender, you can also search by interests like "420-friendly" and "cannabis." You’d be surprised how many people who use the dating site are weed enthusiasts or use marijuana regularly. Although Plenty of Fish wasn’t created with cannabis in mind, it was built in a broad way so that singles have developed a category for it based on their interests. Given how friendly Plenty of Fish is toward weed users and how big its member pool is, it makes for a better experience for some than the marijuana-specific sites and apps, which tend to have a much smaller user pool.

Who it's for:

Date420Friendly, designed for people who live, smoke, and dream of cannabis culture, landed as our last resort due to its outdated interface and lack of a mobile app.

Why we picked this:

With Date420Friendly.com, you no longer have to feel awkward on a first date when you tell them that you enjoy consuming marijuana — after all, it’s kinda in the name, and all sorts of medicinal and recreational users sign up to try their luck here. Date420Friendly.com wants you to "enjoy the highs in life" by meeting new people, playing fun games, joining group discussions, and attending 420-friendly events and meet-and-greets. The site is also a resource for finding new jobs as it works as a classifieds page for the 420 community. If marijuana is a big part of your life, then Date420Friendly.com is your dating site.

Setting up a profile is pretty easy, with basic information like gender, who you’re looking for, and what you’re on the site for (“fun,” “whatever,” “dating,” “friendship” — ”relationship” isn’t an option). You also answer other lifestyle questions like “favorite way to spend time,” how much you drink, and questions about physical characteristics like body type and hair color. Once you upload a photo of yourself and write a short bio, you’re taken to your dashboard, which feels very early 2000s  —  as if it was from the MySpace and Friendster era of social networking. Unfortunately, there is no mobile app available.

Signing up is free, but you really can’t do anything on the site, like sending messages or interacting with other users, until you upgrade your subscription. It seems like a big commitment to upgrade when you don’t know if the dating site is worth using altogether — and the site itself seems rather neglected. We'd consider this more of a last-resort option, and we expect users in big cities to have the best luck.

How we tested

We wanted to make sure that these 420-friendly sites were the best of the best, so we really put them to the test. Over the years, Mashable has reviewed all of the best dating apps, and we're always looking to connect users with the right niche dating app for them.

We created accounts on each of the sites featured here and explored their features — we wanted to see how easy it was to set up a profile, navigate the app or site, and connect with potential partners. We also paid close attention to the quality of the matching algorithms and how well they aligned with our preferences and relationship goals.

We took a close look at the safety and security measures to ensure our readers could use these sites without worry. We also checked out the profile verification processes, privacy settings, and reporting mechanisms for suspicious activity.

Finally, we read through user testimonials and success stories to see what other daters had to say about these sites. We were especially interested in hearing about their experiences finding compatible partners and building long-term relationships.
